Frequently asked

What is Kayu?

Kayu is a marketplace connecting luthiers and instrument builders directly with named exotic tonewood suppliers — back and side sets, soundboards, blanks and fingerboards, with export paperwork handled before the wood reaches the buyer.

How does buying tonewood on Kayu work?

A buyer browses listings and contacts a seller directly through the site. Kayu introduces buyer and seller but is not a party to the sale — payment and shipping are arranged directly between the two.

Does Kayu take payment or a cut?

Not today. Prices are set by the seller and paid directly to them — Kayu doesn’t take payment or a percentage of any sale.

Is CITES-restricted wood available on Kayu?

Yes, where a seller has registered a valid CITES export permit for that species. Kayu tracks CITES status per species; a protected species with no registered permit shows "contact seller" instead of a shipping price, rather than promising delivery it can’t guarantee.

Who sells on Kayu?

Independent, named suppliers — from small workshops to established exporters — who list and ship their own stock. Kayu verifies each seller’s business and legal identity before their listings are shown to buyers.
